Sister Regina Marie Doelker announced today (Monday) that Dr. Cheryl Delaney Kreger, EdD ’66, superintendent of Okemos Public Schools, has been named the second president in the history of Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, Mich.

CATHOLIC SAN FRANCISCO ONLINE (May 19, 2010) – Mercy Sister Kathleen Connolly took her difficulties in stride during her 2009 sojourn in southern Sudan, and difficulties they were: the almost inescapable malaria, the scorpion that invaded her suitcase.

But what Sister Kathleen could not accept was the reality that children routinely endure and often die from such diseases as tapeworm and dysentery. The tragedy is that these diseases are preventable with basic hygiene. To read more, click here.

Isaiah 58 National Solidarity Vigil and Fast in support of immigrants

The Interfaith Immigration Coalition is organizing an eight-week rolling fast in support of immigrants and those opposing SB 1070, the new immigration law in Arizona. Each week, a different group of states will be invited to participate in the fast. Watch for information that will be sent for your state during the appropriate week. The fast begins on June 6 and ends on July 28, the day implementation of SB 1070 is scheduled to start.

OMAHA WORLD-HERALD, Sunday, May 16, 2010 — Omaha’s College of Saint Mary presented diplomas to about 260 spring graduates Sunday in ceremonies at the Qwest Center Omaha.
The commencement address was delivered by Sister Marilyn Lacey, RSM, founding director of Mercy Beyond Borders. The nonprofit organization, based in Santa Clara, Calif., partners with displaced women and girls in southern Sudan to address their extreme poverty through education, entrepreneurship and health care. Americorps project helps children who need a good night’s sleep

KENTUCKY.COM LEXINGTON-HERALD, May 10, 2010 — Nearly 1,000 volunteers came together in Frankfort for a 24-hour blitz that ended Sunday at noon to build beds for needy school-age children. When the sawdust settled at the AmeriCorps Build-A-Bed project, about 545 beds were ready to be donated across Kentucky, said project spokesman David Bachert, an AmeriCorps remedial reading teacher. Every bed and mattress will be accompanied by a care package that includes a set of sheets, a handmade quilt, a night light, books, a stuffed toy and toiletries, Bachert said. Roots and Shoots tend garden

Work on the garden in the meadow on the Burlingame campus by the Mercy High School Burlingame staff continues. The planting is part of the sustainable gardening efforts by the high school club, Roots and Shoots. “We had planted a cover crop of fava beans and vetch in the fall as nitrogen fixers for the soil. We chopped that down and worked it into the soil before we planted,” said Jennifer Lambdin, teacher.

Sisters honored in Bakersfield Parish

On Sunday, April 25, St. Francis Parish in Bakersfield, Calif., celebrated their 100th Anniversary. The day began with an outdoor liturgy celebrated by Bishop John Steinbock of the Fresno Diocese assisted by Monsignor Craig Harrison, pastor of St. Francis Parish. The Sisters of Mercy have a long history (1910 – 1943) with St. Francis as they were the founding religious community that opened the school in 1910 in the basement of the church. The Sisters of Mercy were honored and thanked for their courage and foresight in beginning Catholic education in the parish.

To help celebrate this historical moment, Sister Cris Caballero, who teaches fifth grade at St. Francis School, wore the traditional habit representing the founding sisters. She was welcomed with awe and surprise, especially by her students.
