The building of Unity Square, a low-income housing development in Waterloo, is underway. Sister Kathy Thill was in Waterloo a couple of weeks ago to take photos of the progress. It is hoped that the first residents can move in this August, with the application process beginning in June.

Dr. Erik Camayd–Freixas will speak at Mount Mercy College on Wednesday, March 10, in the Flaherty Community Room at Basile Hall at 7 p.m. The presentation is free and open to the public. Registration to attend the program is not required.

Dr. Erik served as a federal interpreter at the Waterloo, Iowa, hearings following the May 2008 immigration raid at Agriprocessors, Inc. This experience touched the depths of his heart prompting him to write a report to Congress denouncing the violations of due process and the criminalization of immigrant workers. He will share his reflections on the implications the Postville Raid has and will have on immigrant rights during his presentation.

As they tossed shovelsful of dirt on a foggy Friday afternoon, representatives from the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Community, CommonBond Communities, Unity Neighborhood Association and city government all celebrated the fact that they are one step closer to realizing their vision of quality, affordable housing for East Waterloo, Iowa.

Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids is celebrating Mission Week this week (Nov. 16 – Nov. 20). This year’s Mission Week theme, “Sacred is the Call,” includes daily events for Mercy employees including birthday cake, speakers, commissioning of new Mercy leaders and collection drives for items to give to shelters in the community.
